<image:title>WRITINGS - SUBSTACK: The Museum of Drawers: famous artists collaborating in miniature</image:title>
<image:caption>The Museum of Drawers is a unique, curatorial art experiment begun in 1970 by Herbert Distel. In its form, it’s a twenty-story haberdashery storage cabinet that Distel transformed into a miniature museum containing 500 original works of art by 508 artists. The Schubladenmuseum created the publication about the project and now has a dizzyingly-perfect, immersive digital catalog for us to explore. Herbert Distel explained its origins: “While preparing for an exhibition at a gallery in Brussels in 1969, I came acoss an old box that a haberdashery store was throwing out. Although originally made to hold reels of sewing silk, it was not full of nails, screws, hooks, and other bits and pieces. The gallerist couldn’t bear to part with such a practical piece of furniture, despite my best efforts to persuade him otherwise. And I myself was so fascinated by this twenty-story skyscraper in miniature that as soon as I got back to Switzerland, I immediately called Gütermann’s Nähseide in Zurich to ask whether they had such a box to spare. Two or three months later, this wonderful object was in my studio. It was almost certainly Marcel Duchamp’s Boîte-en-valise, a work I had first caught a glimpse of in London in 1966, which set in motion the spiral of thoughts and ideas that eventually led to the Museum of Drawers. In the second half of 1970, therefore, I began drafting and dispatching letters to a few select artists. My vision of using the box to generate a mosaic-like, multidimensional snapshot of the age—the vibrant and inspiring sixties!—was a very vivid one. It was to be a kind of compression of time.” The idea was to give a miniature gallery room to each artist—filling 500 spaces measuring 1 11/16 x 2 1/2 x 1 7/8 inches each. To give Distel some credibility when trying to entice artists to participate (and for galleries to willingly share the mailing addresses of the aritsts), the finished project was scheduled to be on display at documenta 5 in 1972… READ MORE ></image:caption>

<image:title>WRITINGS - SUBSTACK: Calder's "Spirale" sculpture and its best friend, the Eiffel Tower</image:title>
<image:caption>Alexander Calder’s most breathtaking Parisian sculpture shares the grey-toned sky of the country’s capital with the Frenchest woman: La Tour Eiffel. I absolutely love seeing this picture of Calder near Spirale because it immediately makes me think of what I’ve read about his spirt and self. He’s always described first as being very American. To give a little context, he was born and raised in Pennsylvania to artist parents, then moved alongside Europeans and those from other continents as he explored, created, displayed, circus-ed, and sculpted. In The Lives of the Surrealists, author Desmond Norris described the artist from his own experience: “When you shook hands with Alexander Calder, it did not feel like the clasp of a highly refined artist, but more like the grip of a steel worker. In conversation, it was the same—you found yourself in the presence of a gruff construction engineer rather than an articulate surrealist. Yet, barrel-chested Sandy Calder was one of the most original artists of modern times.” Prudence Peiffer, while researching for her book The Slip: The New York City Street that Changes American Art Forever, discovered an archived postcard written by painter Ellsworth Kelly. “Kelly described Calder in a postcard as ‘very jovial’ and, perhaps a comment on Calder’s boisterous, ruddy presence, ‘a farmer.’” In the mid-1950s, modern architect Marcel Breuer and two other architects were commissioned to build the Maison de l’UNESCO campus. In turn, Breuer hired Alexander Calder to create a sculpture for its garden at the southwestern entrance on Avenue de Suffren…. READ MORE ></image:caption>

<image:title>WRITINGS - SUBSTACK: I have a crush on Abstract Expressionist artist Arshile Gorky.</image:title>
<image:caption>Happiest Valentine’s Day/Week to all who love and celebrate! Here’s an ode to an art crush I have on painter Arshile Gorky. Arshile Gorky. I had seen his name often—in art history classes and plastered in biographical books about that era of painting (such as Ninth Street Women). It’s a name that’s hard to forget. The first time I heard it, I thought: “That’s almost Dorky.” And as a self-proclaimed dorky person, I respected that. In the last year, I spotted his name more frequently in books and saw an incredibly moving painting of his during my visit to Peggy Guggenheim’s palazzo-turned-museum in Venice. I quickly became a Gorky Person. It always seems that people are most attached to artists who have lived and died in tragedy. Gorky’s life story isn’t a sunny one (TLDR: it started with genocide and ended in suicide), but that’s not why he’s attracting attention. His refined work continues to speak for him. The Arshile Gorky Foundation has a free Catalogue Raisonné of his work, available for researching and viewing online. How fascinating to be able to see his output all in one place!* The first half of the 1920s show more impressionistic work: streetscapes, self-portraits, still lives, and landscapes tinged with realism. We can easily identify what we’re looking at. There’s an abrupt shift in 1927, beginning with Still Life with Guitar. I almost feel as though I’m looking at a Picasso or a Braque, but I hate to jump to those cheap comparisons. READ MORE ></image:caption>

<image:title>WRITINGS - SUBSTACK: Elaine de Kooning Paints a Picture</image:title>
<image:caption>… What a tremendously talented writer Elaine was! She was perceptive and astute; sensitive and truthful; and deep in the trenches of the movement as a founding Abstract Expressionist artist herself. She read the art movement’s pulses and picked out the glaring talent, buffing up the artists and their works so that they were gleaming during her public exposure of them. Here are some of her writing excerpts, which will give you a perfect idea of how these artists existed and the ways they turned the verb painting into a noun: a painting. Into paintings for all of us to still enjoy—or not! About herself, and the influence of historic cave paintings on an era of her work: “Prehistoric art was secret—hidden way deep as though they didn’t want you to find it. The first two caves we visited—Niaux and Bedheilac—were vast cathedral spaces and we had to walk, it seemed for miles, before we arrived at the first images. The cave walls with their splotches of red and ochre or gleaming white calcium deposites, their rolling turbulent forms and intricate cracks and crevices seemed to be teeming with animals before I saw my first actual prehistoric drawing. When I did see it, a crude and powerful bison, I was overwhelmed by its unexpected immediacy. . . I felt a tremendous identification with those Paleolithic artists. I found myself deep in the caves imagining that I was one of them, looking for surfaces smooth enough to paint on, noticing chunk of yellow clay on the ground that would be perfect to draw with. How alive their animals must have looked to them in the flickering dim light of their torches. And I loved their high-handed way with scale, juxtaposing huge and tiny creatures, with fragmented images—and always, always in profile.” READ MORE ></image:caption>

<image:title>WRITINGS - SUBSTACK: YSL's 1965 Autumn/Winter Couture Mondrian Collection</image:title>
<image:caption>Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan AKA Piet Mondrian is—who I’d say—one of the most internationally recognized modern artists. I think if I were to ask anyone if they knew the name of any modern painters, they’d probably say either: Picasso, Dalí, or Mondrian. Maybe Matisse can be thrown in there too! Even if someone doesn’t know Mondrian by name directly, I’m sure many could likely recall in their visual memory the paintings made of yellow, blue, white, and red squares framed by black lines in various compositions. A 1937 press release from MoMA claimed him as “now generally considered the foremost living master of abstract geometrical design in painting.” Another release commended him for “greatly simplifying his style until he had reduced it to a few straight black lines bounding white rectangles with an occasional area of pure red, blue, or yellow.” He became memorable fast and remained in the top rankings of art. In the minds of the general public, why did Mondrian’s geometric, primary color-hued blocking stick better than Kazimir Malevich’s Black Square or Ellsworth Kelly’s color-soaked canvases? Did fashion have anything to do with it? More specifically: do we have YSL to thank for Piet’s lasting iconographic popularity? READ MORE ></image:caption>

<image:title>WRITINGS - SUBSTACK: Honeymooning in Venice</image:title>
<image:caption>The Grand Canal Entrance Arriving at Venice’s Marco Polo airport is a mind flip of its own. Instead of walking out to the curb to catch an Uber, or hopping onto a train, you’re suddenly in line at a boating dock. I imagined us getting onto an oversized ferry, like the ones I took (and loved) a thousand times while living in Seattle. Instead, we shared a tiny, semi-enclosed, wood-paneled boat with a dozen people. A small girl no more than 8 years old practically sat on my lap. We were in complete darkness for most of the hour-long ride, as it was around 8pm. Eventually, the boat dramatically slowed and we approached the entrance of what I quickly realized was *The* Grand Canal. While entering the city by boat at night, the Venetian lights doubled as they reflected and danced in the water. There was a particular sound the passenger boats made as they coasted along the water: an eerie hum. The sound echoed and etched itself into the mind. There was a haunting feeling when pairing this noise with the vision of darkened waters, buildings soaked with patina, and empty rooms with peculiar, glass chandeliers. The tremendously age of the city hit us, along with the presence of all of its long-gone people who once enjoyed the same water route. We looked onward at the people along the sidewalks in front of us, some dining with their bodies a few inches from the edge of the stone. The water sat perfectly level to the sidewalk, daring to soak some ankles. Everyone’s movements appeared to be in slow motion—including the pace of our boat—until we reached our Sant'Angelo stop. Our feet met the surprisingly sturdy ground of the San Marco neighborhood and we curved through the silent, narrow streets with our luggage. We saw some spotted street lamps, and even fewer people. Some words of awe escaped us along the way. Am I already crying in a cafe? We stepped foot in the cafe for the first time the next morning, and there were a few men standing at the counter in their cropped beige bomber-style coats. Their whitened hair was trimmed almost squarely around them, their bones solid seeming. The emotions that hit me when I saw these brief details turned me to a puddle of mush. There can be so much nostalgia buried in a place you’ve never been. And people can have places stuck in them. My Papa, for example, was so deeply Italian without me paying it any attention while he was alive. This cafe moment was the first time the world confirmed it for me. The string that connected his accent, his hairstyle, his prim clothing, the sparkle in his eyes, the tender version of his masculinity—it was sewn in him from his Italian father. He was born and raised in Ecuador speaking Spanish, but everything about him shouted Italian. I understood this now, and felt water in my eyes while eating my first delicious cornetto with jam inside cafe Marchini Time. READ MORE ></image:caption>

<image:title>WRITINGS - Models: The Miniature Worlds that Charles and Ray Built</image:title>
<image:caption>For Charles and Ray Eames, models were as philosophical or scientific as they were diverse. They were generative, in ideas and in the building of human relationships. A model defined concepts of space and transformed a project through innumerable iterations; they offered a multi-layered experience comparable to the cavernous Eames Office in Venice, California. In both the Eames models and the office itself, there was a fine-tuned attention to detail, an exploration of knowledge, a collection of objects arranged to tell stories, and a spattering of people to make the experience come to life. The main difference being the obvious: scale. “We think of ourselves as tradesmen,” Charles Eames said matter-of-factly during his lecture at the Smithsonian Institution in May 1977. “Mostly, a kind of custom trade. People come to us for things. And mostly, what they come to us for are models, in one sense or another: models before the fact or models after the fact.” Handwritten in the margins of his lecture notes, he defined the two scenarios. “Model before the fact: say an architect’s proposal, showing how something might be structured, if we chose. Model after the fact: say, a scientist’s model of a giant molecule, showing how something may be structured, according to the evidence.” Charles reformulated his description of model making: “By models, I mean ways of structuring certain problems.” READ MORE ></image:caption>

<image:title>WRITINGS - SUBSTACK: The singular book on Hans Hofmann's School of Fine Arts supply list</image:title>
<image:caption>Modern painter and educator Hans Hofmann prescribed one book to his students on an introductory syllabus for his art school, the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The first line on the syllabus read: “It is recommended to students planning to join the Hans Hofmann School to read Sheldon Cheney’s (1934) book - Expressionism in Art.” The remainder of the page described the extensive and “necessary materials” for drawing and painting— all of which, as noted, could be purchased upon arrival in Provincetown. An outdoor easel, turpentine, charcoal paper, Rubens no. 7 flat brush with “some short, some long bristles,” oil paints in specific colors (cadmium lemon, cerulean blue, alizarine crimson, burnt umber, etc.), and…Expressionism in Art. I got my hands on a vintage 1st edition copy as soon as humanly possible and it has been sitting on my desk in all of its tattered glory for nearly a year. I’ve been itching to read it, obviously, but I felt (and still feel) intimidated by its importance! Before reading it, I wanted to peer into the layered history of Hofmann, his school for the arts, and to think a little deeper about why he might have chosen this exact book. What messages did it have for art students at the time? Why was it the only book Hofmann listed? Like my usual BOOK CLUB writings, I’ll include some of my personal recommendations at the end. Think of these as what I’d urge my own imaginary art students to read. Or, if his Provincetown school still existed and I had the luck to be a student, this would be a short list of what I would gravitate toward and share with my most-trusted classmates. Pretending I was there in Provincetown is my idea of a thrilling time! READ MORE ></image:caption>

<image:title>WRITINGS - SUBSTACK: Le Corbusier's Keyboard of Colors, Eames Greige, and other hue symphonies.</image:title>
<image:caption>I began researching specific artists and the colors they are widely identified with and quickly realized during the plunge down this colorful rabbit hole that the histories had another strong point in common. Each of the artists have had their color stories connected with the sense of sound. I’m currently reading Olivia Laing’s Funny Weather: Art in an Emergency and skipped backward to reread the chapter on Robert Rauschenberg (the chapter is called “For Yes” which totally parallels the meaning behind my naming of Absolument). Laing describes Rauschenberg’s studies under color theorist and Bauhaus instructor Josef Albers, and Robert’s series of “White Paintings” and “Black Paintings.” Laing writes: “By applying white house paint with a roller, Rauschenberg deliberately avoided incident or gesture. They were pure surface: the first and most extreme manifestation of Rauschenberg’s conception of art as a mirror for capturing the outside world. Look long enough, and you’d start to see shadows and reflections; the absence-that-wasn’t which inspired [John] Cage to make 4’33”, his famous composition that deploys silence to expose a symphony of random ambient sound.” One act of rebellion that I remember from a modern art history class in university was learning about Rauschenberg’s Erased de Kooning Drawing in which he did just as the title suggested. He was given a drawing by de Kooning and then completely erased it, leaving behind an empty canvas with a distinct hue of silence.</image:caption>

<image:title>WRITINGS - The Seattle World’s Fair, in Six Parts</image:title>
<image:caption>Introducing the Fair | “World’s Fairs, stimuli for new ideas and for probing the future, are places of education, wonderment, excitement, and amusement,” asserted Paul Thiry, the primary architect for the Century 21 Exhibition. More widely known as the Seattle World’s Fair, this exhibition opened its four entrances to the public on April 21st, 1962. With an unforgettable space-age theme, the fair anchored America, and its increasingly jet-focused city of Seattle, as leading characters in the worldwide race to put man into space. For six months, fairgoers explored 74-acres of science, commerce, industry, entertainment, food, and art. Thiry continued, “The termination of Century 21 Exposition will mark a beginning. Seattle World’s Fair is a phoenix among fairs, far from it will emerge a new phenomenon of plazas and buildings destined to provide pleasure for present and future generations.”</image:caption>

<image:title>WRITINGS - Black Sun: How Capitol Hill Became Home to Isamu Noguchi’s 12-Ton Sculpture</image:title>
<image:caption>“Meet you by the Black Sun...I want it to be a meeting place and I can see young people gathering around it,” beamed Isamu Noguchi to a writer at The Seattle Times, perhaps moments after his sculpture’s public reveal on September 12th, 1969. Black Sun stands proudly at nine feet tall and is impressively polished, resting its circular frame in an act that defies physics. There are fewer Seattle experiences more enchanting than staring, due west, through the asymmetrical center of Black Sun’s granite. The origins of Black Sun began in the first month of 1967. The National Foundation on the Arts and Humanities provided a $45,000 grant to three separate cities to institute a public art sculpture. Seattle was one of the chosen locations, paired with the artist Isamu Noguchi. By this time, Noguchi was an</image:caption>

<image:title>WRITINGS - Benjamin McAdoo: A Modernist Architect of Merit</image:title>
<image:caption>His WWII draft registration card reads: 6’1”, 205 pounds, with dark hair, eyes, and complexion; census records inform that he was a son to an auto mechanic and a music teacher. Historians describe Benjamin F. McAdoo Jr. in simple yet monumental terms: the first Black architect registered in Washington State, and the founder of the first African American-owned architecture practice in Seattle. McAdoo’s influence extended beyond the walls of his modern designs as he established himself as a pillar in the fight for racial inclusion. The link between one’s skin color and one’s access to housing was apparent to McAdoo during his childhood in Pasadena, California in the 1920s and 30s. Redlining and other racial restrictions confined the McAdoos to a neighborhood reserved for Mexican- and Chinese-American residents—most of whom were renting properties from white homeowners who intentionally relocated to predominantly-white neighborhoods. McAdoo went on to study architecture at the University of Southern California, later transferring to the University of Washington.</image:caption>
