Picasso's Clown - Framed Vintage Artwork

$236.00

This vintage French reproduction print of Paul en Arlequin (Paul in Harlequin) by Pablo Picasso illustrates Picasso’s son dressed in a clown costume while seated on a ruffled, tasseled chair. His eyes search longingly in the distance.

History from the Musée Picasso in Paris:

“February 1921. Pablo Picasso lives alongside his wife Olga Khokhlova, in their apartment at 23 rue de la Boétie in Paris. A major event upsets their lives: the arrival of their son, Paulo, on February 21 of the same year.

The little boy is dressed in a suit identified as that of Harlequin, with the colorful diamonds of the jumpsuit, the strawberry around the neck, and the bicorn on the head. This costume was left to him or offered by his friend Jean Cocteau, who visited him disguised as a Harlequin, one day in 1916. The painter used it years later to dress some of his models, including his son here, in 1924.”

**

Paired with the original mat, frame, and glass. Cleaned to near-perfection, with a few age spots of patina. The artwork remains in its historic frame, sealed by Romero Encadrement in Bayonne, Basque Country, France. The original was artwork painted in 1924, but this print’s date is unknown. It was framed between 1970 and 1985, as determined by the years of the Romero frame shop.

Frame dimensions: 12 × 15 × 0.75 inches

Shipped directly from my home in the Basque Country in southwestern France.
