Artist André Derain painted the famous Italian harlequin, Pierrot, in 1924 in his ballooning white costume with contrasting black circled details. For decades, other artists have been following suit.

This is a French original, vintage watercolor painting on textured paper. The woman is dressed in a Pierrot-clown-meets-ballet-couture way, with her voluminous white dress, ruffled collar, clown-like hat, and silk heels—all of which are adorned with oversized, black pom-poms. Handwritten “Emmet aquarelle (watercolor)” on verso.
